The origins of door knockers can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome. In those early days, they were primarily functional—designed to alert inhabitants of a visitor’s arrival. Made of iron or bronze, they were often forged into simple rings or bars. However, even at this early stage, some knockers began to feature elaborate motifs, especially on the doors of wealthy citizens. The lion’s head, for example, became a popular symbol, representing strength, protection, and authority.
